Things to See & Do

Perched on the edge of the East Neuk of Fife between Crail and Anstruther, Kilrenny Mill is the perfect base for exploring one of Scotland’s most beautiful corners — and far beyond. Whether you fancy a gentle coastal stroll, a championship round of golf or a full Highland adventure, it all starts at your doorstep.

On Your Doorstep

The Fife Coastal Path runs right past Kilrenny Mill. Wander east to Crail’s famously photogenic harbour or west through Cellardyke’s tiny 16th-century harbour into Anstruther — both walks reward you with rugged coastline, seabirds and sweeping views over the Firth of Forth.

Anstruther, the largest of the East Neuk fishing villages, is just minutes away. Visit the Scottish Fisheries Museum - home to historic boats including the Reaper, star of TV’s Outlander — then queue for fish and chips at the legendary, award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar, best enjoyed on the harbour wall.

Crail boasts one of Scotland’s most painted and photographed harbours. Pick up a fresh crab or lobster roll from the Lobster Hut by the harbour, browse the potteries and galleries, and explore the cobbled lanes of this medieval Royal Burgh.

The East Neuk

Isle of May boat trips depart from Anstruther harbour between May and September. In season the island hosts a quarter of a million seabirds — including some 45,000 pairs of puffins — plus grey seals, with dolphins often spotted en route.

Pittenweem, a working fishing village, hosts a renowned Arts Festival each August, with galleries and studios open year-round.

Elie and Earlsferry offer one of Fife’s finest golden beaches — ideal for sandcastles, paddleboarding and the famous Ship Inn beach cricket.

Scotland’s Secret Bunker, hidden beneath a farmhouse near Anstruther, is a fascinating Cold War command centre buried 100 feet underground.

Kellie Castle and Garden, a beautifully preserved 14th-century castle with Arts & Crafts gardens, is a short drive inland.

St Andrews - 20 Minutes Away

The historic home of golf is just a twenty-minute drive from Kilrenny Mill. Walk the Old Course’s famous Swilcan Bridge, explore the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and Castle, stroll West Sands beach of Chariots of Fire fame, and enjoy the shops, restaurants and cafés of Scotland’s oldest university town. Families love Craigtoun Country Park and St Andrews Aquarium.

Wider Fife

Falkland is a picture-perfect village beneath the Lomond Hills, home to Falkland Palace — the Renaissance hunting palace of the Stuart kings and a familiar sight to Outlander fans.

Culross is Scotland’s most complete 17th-century town, with the ochre-coloured Culross Palace and charming cobbled streets.

Golfers are spoilt for choice: beyond St Andrews, Fife boasts over 40 courses including Kingsbarns, Crail Balcomie (the world’s seventh-oldest club) and Elie.

Day Trips Further Afield

Dundee, around 45 minutes away, is the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design - home to V&A Dundee and Captain Scott’s ship RRS Discovery.

Edinburgh, about 90 minutes by car or via train from Leuchars, offers the Castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace and world-class festivals.

The Highlands are closer than you think - head north over the Tay and you can reach Highland Perthshire in just over an hour: Pitlochry, Dunkeld and Loch Tay. Longer day trips can take you to Glencoe, Loch Ness or the Cairngorms National Park.
